Ray Jordan Bowled Over by Chardies

In the West Weekend on Easter Saturday 2020 Ray Jordan reviewed all three of our Chardonnays and brought some brightness to these isolating times. We look forward to our Cellar Door opening once again when restrictions lift and welcoming you to try them all.

Here’s what Ray had to say about the three chardonnays:

The Willow 2016 – 95 points

“Heydon Estate makes a generous full style of Chardonnay and this is another excellent example of a wine that delivers when young, but which has the potential to age well. Creamy cashew and grapefruit with a minerally edge. There’s a slightly charry mid-palate character and the finish is very long. I tasted this after another six months and it had gone up a notch as these Heydon Estate wines generally do.”

The Streaker 2018 – 93 points

“This is the initial release of a new wine made in a slightly funkier way with a more reductive mouthfeel. It’s been whole-bunch pressed and wild yeast fermented in puncheons. It’s not hard to see why it’s already won a couple of trophies. There is a level of sophistication here. Aromas of brioche, lemon curd and light cashew on the nose. Seamless and beautifully integrated. Dry, savoury finish.”

Hallowed Turf 2018 – 92 points

A lightly oaked wine, whole-bunch pressed to old oak and stainless steel barrels and wild fermented. I do like this slightly more restrained style to the Hallowed Turf. Balanced oak and the fruit is excellent and the extended palate has a minerally purity about it. Chalky, with brioche and lemon sorbet characters.

“Clonal mix of 50% 95 and 227, 50% Gin Gin.Selectiv’-harvested,50% fermented in used French oak, 50% in stainless steel barrels. Extraordinarily intense chardonnay; the oak has disappeared, leaving a pure, unadorned varietal mix of stone fruit and citrus.”  Drink to 2024.

2014 THE WILLOW SINGLE VINEYARD MARGARET RIVER CHARDONNAY, 97 points

”Hand-picked 100% Gin Gin clone, whole-bunch pressed, cloudy juice to French oak (40% new), wild fermentation. This is true elegance, the straightest of straight bats. Margaret River isn’t given to producing Chablis style, but this has a go, with many years (and runs) ahead.”  Drink to 2026

”Vines planted ‘98, hand-picked, crushed, destemmed, 4weeks on skins, 18 months in French oak (60% new). A very powerful wine, cabernet at its Viv Richards haughtiest best. The tannins are a firm but balanced part of the long, structured blackcurrant and black olive finish.”  Drink to 2038.

2015 THE DOC SINGLE VINEYARD MARGARET RIVER PETIT VERDOT, 94 points

”Includes 15% cabernet sauvignon, hand-picked, matured for 18 months in French oak (40% new). Bright crimson-purple; opens with a juicy flourish, then petit verdot tannins wake up and join the band, providing both balance and length.”  Drink to 2035.

New Release Icon Reds Just in Time for Winter

Winter is coming … and we have just what The Doc ordered to help us see it out! Our flagship Cabernet Sauvignon W.G. Grace 2013, 96 points James Halliday, is now released. Along with this a very limited release of The Doc Petit Verdot 2015, only available online and at our Cellar Door.

The W.G. Grace 2013 continues the long lineage of fine Cabernet Sauvignon from the Estate, as reflected by James Halliday. This vintage shows seductive aromas of classic cassis and mulberry with an elegant savoury note, and once again subtle fresh herbal hints backed with tobacco and fine leather. The complex palate is redolent of dried red and blue fruits intermingled with couverture chocolate, black olive and the characteristic graphite-like minerality. The palate is long and balanced, with the acidity driving this wine. Demonstrating great depth of fruit intensity, along with a soft, velvety and well integrated tannin profile.

Pair this Cabernet with a rich aged cheddar, Pasta al Ragù and dry aged beef.

Download our tasting notes for full details.

The Doc Petit Verdot 2015 leads in with a lifted bouquet, revealing fruits of the forest and violet, accompanied by earthy savoury characters, aniseed and mocha. On the palate, cassis and red fruits, particularly vibrant raspberry, take centre stage. In its youth this wine still shows some powerful tannin, albeit in a velvet glove. As the wine opens, layers of savoury complexity reveal charcuterie, earth, spice, and chalky minerality. The wine finishes with impressive length and notes of cedary oak and dark bitter cocoa.

We think this will be delicious with classic charcuterie, Italian sausage with soft polenta and standing rib roast.

Here are the full tasting notes for you to download.
